Mothers glad eye

The poster boy of many a suburban housewife  of the 1980’s Dublin 6 postal district was the rather roguish dictator from Libya …quietly during vast queque for overpriced petrol  ..mother entertained aspirations to join his all female phalanx of bodyguards .Of course these were innocent times and mother was able to find appeal in the defiant stance of a world populated with figures determined to overthrow capitalism  and of course free us from the shackles of consumerism …we as children were confused as we seemed to be impervious to consumption ..shelves of books inherited rather than bought ….never the less  mother was willing if called upon to give up family life for “that lovely man who told OPEC to feck  off!  Her words not mine “….Yassar arafat always got a cheer  as quietly mother had a soft spot for men  on tanks …father of course insisted it was Che chuvaros phone calls late at night from Bolivia   that drove a wedge between my parents …..and particularly his insistence on calling mother “consuela Anna Maria” during his reverse charge transatlantic calls …
